Something special and historic this weekend. The legendary Sonny Rollins in one of his last appearances in 1959 before his self-imposed withdrawal from the scene for a period of introspection, regrouping and reappraisal. This one, a club date from Aix-en-Provence in France was fortunately recorded and later broadcast (and re-broadcast) by the venerable Radio France International on March 11, 1959.
Here’s who plays and what they play:
Sonny Rollins Trio – Live at Aix-en-Provence
01 Woody ‘n’ you
02 But not for me
03 Lady Bird
Sonny Rollins (sax)
Henry Grimes (b),
Kenny Clarke (dm)
SONYY ROLLINS TRIO
March 11, 1959,
Despite the seemingly short set of 3 numbers, they play for almost an hour. So there’s a lot of exploring going on. And of course, the audience didn’t want them leave. Sonny finally having to tell the fans “Je suis Fatiguè”.
And listening some 54 years later, I didn’t want it to end either.

The legendary Sonny Rollins this weekend, with a concert recorded in Munich by German Radio in October of 1965. From what I gather, this concert has been recently issued commercially, so it may be nothing particularly new to Sonny Rollins fans and collectors. But if you’re just getting into Jazz, and have only heard about Sonny Rollins, this is a great concert from his experimental 1960’s period. He’s joined by bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen and drummer Alan Dawson.
Here’s what’s on the player:
Sonny Rollins Trio
Munich – October 1965
1. Darn That Dream
2. Standards Medley/There Will Never Be Another You
3. The Song Is You
4. On Green Dolphin Street/Night and Day
Memorable concert and vintage Sonny Rollins.
Can’t ask for better on a Sunday afternoon.

Another historic concert this weekend. This one featuring The Max Roach Quintet, joined by the legendary Sonny Rollins. All recorded on November 10, 1966 in Stockholm by Sveriges Radio. Along with Rollins and Roach are Freddie Hubbard (Trumpet), James Spaulding, (Alto), Ronnie Mathews (Piano) and Jymie Merritt (Bass).
A cool one for a Sunday Afternoon.
