Familiar territory tonight. The inimitable Rod Stewart and Faces, recorded in concert for the BBC at The Paris Theater in London in 1971.
I don’t think a whole lot needs to be said about this band that hasn’t already been said several thousand times over. They epitomized the hedonistic 70s in a way that was appealing, and they achieved Superstar status in a relatively short period of time. The Faces had already established themselves years earlier as The Small Faces and, among a string of hits, their Summer-of-Love anthem Itchykoo Park has achieved a certain immortality, for better or worse. But with personnel changes and a huge change in direction, and with the addition of Rod Stewart, who had already made a name for himself with the likes of Jeff Beck, The Faces were primed and poised to become sensations.
And they did – for half of the 1970s.
Jeff Beck – After The Yardbirds, new heights.

Since I ran one of the last Yardbirds sessions for the BBC the other night, I thought I would toss in a Yardbirds alumnus, who was on the rise around the time of those last Yardbirds sessions. The Jeff Beck Group also wound up being a springboard of talent who would pass through the ranks.
In 1967 The Jeff Beck Group consisted of Beck, Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, Mickey Waller and Dave Ambrose.
On this post are excerpts from two sessions the group did for The BBC; three tracks from 1967 and one track from 1968.
Here’s what’s on the player:

Hi Ho Silver Lining – March 7, 1967 (Saturday Club)
Rock My Plimsoul – July 4, 1967 (Saturday Club)
Shapes Of Things – Sept. 17, 1968 – (Top Gear)
Needless to say, after The Yardbirds there was no looking back.
Rod Stewart and Faces – Boozy Rock n’ Roll had its time in the sun.

Another classic concert this week – Faces with Rod Stewart, recorded live by the BBC on May 23rd, 1971.
It was recorded around the time their milestone album Long Player was released, and much of the material from that album is part of the concert. Rod Stewart is in top form, as is the rest of the band who were just hitting huge on the popularity scales and about to take on the U.S.
A good time was had by all.
And of course, you really have to play this one loud.
