Forty-six years ago, if you lived in Los Angeles and were roughly in age up to, perhaps 25, you were undoubtedly listening to B. Mitchel Reed on KFWB this week, or alternating between this and his stint at KMET-FM. Even though in 1967 radio was in the process of changing and Reed wasn’t long destined to be a mainstay of top-40 AM Radio, it was still the place you got to hear things you normally wouldn’t know about.
And even though people began to flock to FM radio, beginning around June of 1967 with the dawn of KMET and KPPC (in Los Angeles) because the sound was so good, we were still depending on what the tried-and-true turned us on to in the way of new music. B. Mitchel Reed was one of those people who liked to expose his audience to new stuff.
As a reminder of how Pop Culture worked in 1967 and how we got our information, here is a one-hour slice of a B.Mitchel Reed show from KFWB, from 10-11:00 pm on the night of July 15th, 1967.
