News for this day in 1967 began with word of an Iberian Airline Jet making an emergency landing in Puerto Rico, enroute to Havana from Madrid.
President Johnson‘s handling of the Vietnam War continued its downhill slide with 57% of Americans now very much against it. The unpopularity of the war was now making itself felt in the “dump Johnson” movement, which was gaining momentum.
Former British Prime Minister Clement Atlee passed away earlier on this morning. Atlee was the first post-World War 2 Prime Minister in the UK and oversaw the independence movements that sprang up during those years, including granting India independence from Britain.
Student riots broke out in Tokyo, reported to be the worst in many years. So far, one protestor was killed.
And today was the first day of College for Prince Charles. He managed to show up 2 hours late to class.
